Q&A with a Monk-5-Monotony

D- Disciple M- Monk
D: - I feel Monotonous

M: - can you be specific

D: - My Job is Monotonous

M:- Why do you think  your job is monotonous?

D: -I am doing the same thing

M: -For how many years?

D:- Nearly a decade

M:- Ok. Let me give you a situation. One of your friends has been diagnosed for block in the heart and he needs to undergo a surgery. Your friend has two   surgeons in the mind:

1.  A surgeon with a decade of experience and who charges few lakhs.

2. A surgeon with two decades of experience and who charges a lakh or two more than surgeon 1.

If your friend is asking your opinion to select a doctor, whom will you recommend?

D:-I will refer surgeon 2

M:- Why will you do that?

D:- Surgeon 2 has more experience and would have attended more cases.

M:- Can you define surgeon 2 in simple words.

D:- He is an expert.

M:- Why do you call him an expert?

D:-His experience as well his volume speaks.

M:- When others do a similar job and stay in the same field, we perceive them as experts, but when we do the same job for  many years, we call it monotonous.

Many of us are failing to see the making of expert in us.

D:- But doctors jobs are different, they are responsible for human life.

M: -So does that mean that they should not feel Monotonous?

D:- No I didn't mean that

M: - Remember every job has something or other to do with human beings. Let me give you an example:

A car manufacturer who is working in a shop floor for is responsible for human safety in the car.

A drug manufacturer who mixes ingredients is responsible for recovery from illness.

A Gun manufacturer is responsible for soldier’s life.

A school teacher who teaches the same subject is responsible for building a strong foundation.

There are many such examples. We need to look into biggerpicture of our job to appreciate the power of repetition.

D:- Do you mean, I should see who benefits from my job?

M:- It is not only about others benefits, look into how you will benefit out of it and list down the skills and knowledge you had gained over a period of time, that will help you rewrite your CV.

Re-look into appreciations you had received that will help you understand the efforts you had put.

Reflect on the days when you saw the existing job as a dream job, which will help you appreciate the efforts you had put to reach your destination.

M: Remember, Don't let the monotony in you to kill the expert in you

D:- Thank you.

Being Jaby is being a fine human being.

Being Jaby is being a fine human being.   L&D Global Chennai Chapter was instrumental in bringing Jaby closer to my heart, our journey was not too long, but it was filled with fun, humour, joy and learning too. When Jaby was present, dullness was absent. He filled the hall with his sense of humour, and his thoughts were deep-rooted in bringing the best out of every human. Jaby was the most admired person in any forum; when Jaby picked the mic, the audience pulled themselves to the edge of the chair. Jaby was casual in his appearance, but he was a thorough professional everywhere. During COVID, if there was one person whom I counted on to help people, it was Jaby; his car was filled with masks, sanitizer and an oxygen concentrator. His social bent of mind made him a good Samaritan. Jaby was a curious child, whenever we both met, he was curious to improve his skills and knowledge, and his quest for development was limitless. Jaby and I collaborated in the year ...
