Walking, Pedometer and Life Lessons

Walking, Pedometer and Life Lessons

From February 2019 I started walking to keep myself fit and to reduce my weight too. Though I was walking for an hour or so, I felt my motivation to continue was not high. After a week I decided to download a pedometer App to measure my steps etc and started walking along with my mobile.

I was trying to understand the features of the App and I found something interesting in the APP, the Pedometer was classifying the person based on the steps we keep in a day.

·         3000 Steps -Away from Sofa

·         7000 Steps- Keep Fit

·         10000-Healthy day

·         14000-Slimmer day

·         20000-Hiker

·         30000-Explorer

·         40000-Hero

·         60000-Conqueror

First few weeks I was achieving between 3000-7000 steps and felt happy about my ability to walk daily. While I was trying to understand the APP better, I found two more features which was attractive, 1-Remainder to walk and the second feature Was setting a step goal. As soon as I explored these features, I started using it and set my Remainder for 6 A.M and set a goal for 10000 steps a day. These two features increased my motivation to walk and achieve my 10000 steps a day.

My walking continued for months and mind was tuned to achieve my step goals.

During lock-down I decided to raise my bar and decided to achieve 14000 steps a day and to ensure that I need to do it for 100 days continuously, indeed there was time to do it and firm reason to do it, which was to reduce my weight.

I was happy when people started complimenting for my weight loss and I was excited to my wear shirts which I could not wear due to my belly. I was reflecting on my walking and discovered few life lessons from my walking.

Measure Your Performance: Not everyone uses pedometer and for those who are committed to maintain a good health they do not require one. However, for people who would like to stay self-motivated and to be reminded of their goals, pedometer does help.

Let us relate this with our life, we all need to measure our performance against the goals we have. If you feel, you do not have a goal set one today, if you feel you do have a goal but you are yet to measure it, connect with your internal pedometer to measure your performance.

Start slowly and keep increasing : During my initial stages I was walking slowly and I was trying to achieve 3000 steps a day, once I become consistent I gradually increased my steps, which I found to be easy to achieve my goal.

Sometime people start with a bang and silently withdraw, it is better to start silently and continue with a bang. Let us not become tired before it becomes a habit. Today’s large companies were started in a small space, with lesser Capital and few people on the roles. But today these companies are not only market leaders, they also keep growing year on year

If you are yet to walk, start with few minutes and few steps and keep doing it daily till it wakes you up.

Break your walking time: When I decided to walk 10000 steps a day, I also decided to do split my goal and achieve it over a day. Instead of achieving it in one go, I decided to walk few steps in the morning and few steps in evening, which not only reduced my burden, it also made my evenings more meaningful than ever.

In life, we can divide our goals into small parts and stay focused to achieve those parts instead of making the goal a difficult task to achieve

Walk behind a person, who is faster than you: Sometimes, when we walk behind a person who walks slowly, our speed will also come down, it is better to either walk ahead of them or walk behind a person who is faster than you.

In life our success is based on whom we follow, it is better to follow someone who is focused and fast than, a person who is slow & yet to understand where he is going.

Avoid sitting for a long time: there are days when I sit for a longer hours without realizing the impact on my health, thanks to medical journals which has enlightened me to take a short walk after few hours of continuous sitting. To develop the habit of walking after sitting for a while, I decided to increase my steps to 14000 a day and changed my goal in my pedometer. This new goal was pushing me hard to either walk in between my work or force me use stairs, make me walk few meters a day while I was getting my cab.

In life, we need to move from our comfort zone to find out ways and means to achieve our goals.

Revisit your records: The pedometer records our performance and it alerts us about our achievements. Once I walked for longer hours and pedometer sent a message, stating that I have set a record, after few months when I walked more, I was notified about my new record.

One day I was walking for a longer hour and sat to relax. Next, I was just scrolling back to see my past performance, I found that if I would have walked few steps additionally on my previous day, I would have broken all my previous records and set a new record. Since I was not tracking my records, I was not breaking my records too.

In life, you need to compete with yourself more than others, every time you break your record you are winning the champion in you and creating the newer version of you.

Walking is more than an exercise; it is an opportunity for talking with yourself and improving yourself.

Tie your lace, get your Pedometer in place, and keep exploring the power of life lessons while you walk.

The Modes of Persuasion The modes of persuasion, often referred to as ethical strategies or rhetorical appeals, are devices in rhetoric that classify the speaker's appeal to the audience. They are: ethos, pathos, logos, and the less-used Kairos & telos The above model has been used by Advertisement agencies to grab the attention of the viewers and finally bring them to the purchase desk or use the cart in shopping sites. If we carefully examine the model, it has a sound application in running an effective training program too.
