Developing People- Lessons from Gardening

There are some employees who are new like yet to bloom flowers, some are in the process of blooming. Some grow up to be beautiful flowers, the beauty is that plant bears all types of flowers.

similarly in an organization, we have variety of employees. The objective is to see how we grow more flowers. The crux is not to focus only on the flower, we need to  focus on the plant. In gardening there are variety of activities that needs to be done to ensure the plant grows and sustain.

1. Choosing a Goal is like choosing a seed: A clear goal communicates a future for your employees.

2.Timing for entry into business is like choosing the planting time: The timing is important for any business to develop, entering in the right time ensures effective utilisation of manpower.

3. Selecting a right Market is like selecting the right spot for planting: Selecting the right market ensures growth, when you are in the right market you attract right people.

4. Selecting the right activities to develop the organisation is like starting the seed mix:  Adding right amount of organization development activities like vision building, idea generation from employees & relationship building exercises do help an organization grow.

5.Planting ideas is like planting the seeds: Ensure your business ideas are planted in the minds of the employees effectively.

6. Developing plan of action is like Covering the seeds based on their size: Ensure every goal is supported with a right plan of action, which will also define the role of the employees.

7. Developing plans to restrict competition is like Sealing against the moisture: An organization must be sealed with right competitive entry barrier, that increases the pride of an employee that he is working for a unique business model.

8. Tracking and fool proofing the plans is like Keeping the seeds in warm, indirect sunlight: Goals should be protected and revisited to ensure that organization does not derail, this ensures confidence among employees that their journey is safe.

9. Ensuring employees improve their competency level is like Checking moisture levels: Ensure that negatives or comfort zone doesn't affect the system, which will reduce monotony in the workplace.

If we follow the principles of taking care of plant, we can also develop right action plans to develop people in the organisation.

Developing people is like developing a garden

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
