Yet Another Day or a Purposeful Day?
Some people wait for the day to end, feeling exhausted
and unaccomplished. They call the next day yet another day and wait for the
weekend. This is common among people who live monotonous lives and brood over them. In contrast, others end the day feeling satisfied and excited about the
next day. They firmly believe that the next day is not just another day. It
brings 86,400 new seconds and millions of new cells. They also wait
for the weekend—not to escape their days, but to celebrate the days they've
lived well.
Some of you may wonder how these people enjoy their
days. There can be many personal reasons. However, through my interactions with
such people, the knowledge I have gained from books, and my own experience, I
have found one powerful quality that drives their day: a sense of purpose.
When we start our day with a goal, set an action plan
according to that goal, follow through, and review our day, we feel in control.
Sometimes the plan changes. Even then, we know we handled challenges and
crises. Once we go to bed with a sense of accomplishment and the lessons from
the day, we are excited about the next day. Imagine two colleagues: one drifts
through tasks and collapses into bed; the other works toward a clear goal,
reviews progress, and rests with satisfaction. The difference is not the number
of hours but the presence of purpose.
By making this a daily practice—with 1% improvement
every day—we feel that we are learning, progressing, and living our lives with
a sense of purpose and gratitude for the fresh 86,400 seconds and millions of
new cells in our body.
Surround yourself with people who are excited to
live, not with people who brood over what they do and who lack gratitude for
the experiences that life offers.
Final word: Start your day with purpose and end it with a sense of
accomplishment, so you don't call it yet another day.
