Goals and Beyond

Manager: Ravi what is your goal?

Ravi: I want to buy a flat?

Manager: Why do want to buy a flat?

Ravi: I think as a person after few years of work experience it will be a pride to own flat and prove that I am capable of doing something.

Manager: Sunil, What is your goal?

Sunil: I need to buy a flat?

Manager: Sunil why do you need to buy a flat?

Sunil: we never lived in a own house till date. Above all my father is retiring in next six months and he will be celebrating his 60th Birthday.

I need to ensure that his 60th Birthday and my house warming ceremony should happen on the same day.

I personally feel I should do it as per my plan.

Manager: Can you elaborate how you are working towards it.

Sunil: I am using 3 Ws and 1 H.

Manager: can you explain it.

Sunil: Sure I will explain it.

1. What is my Goal?

To own a  2BHK at 45 lakhs as per my family's preference.

2. Why should I achieve my Goal?

To ensure my Parents peacefully stay in their own home.

3. When will I buy it?

Before 2 Months from the date of my father's retirement.

4. How will I achieve my Goal?

I have divided my goals into plan of actions and I am strictly following as per the deadlines set by me. Above all my action plans are written and I get remainders to stick to it.

Manager:Good Sunil. Wishing you a great a success in your endeavors.

Sunil: You are the source of my inspiration and your goal setting meetings did help me to be focused.

Manager: Ravi, does your Goal all have the same amount of clarity.

Ravi: To be honest, after listening to Sunil I doubt whether mine is a Goal or a desire.

Manager: Why do you feel so?

Ravi: I have 6 takeaways

1. Sunil's Goal had a purpose but mine was vague.

2. He did have an action plan but I didn't have one.

3.Sunil had it in his papers that's the indication of Commitment but mine was in my mind.

4. He had deadlines but I didn't think about it.

5. Above all he is living his goal but I am not.

6.My major learning is Goals without a strong purpose is are not goals.

All the three walk towards the cafeteria.

Reflect on what Sunil said, you will understand the art of setting goals.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
