Motivating
Employees
When was the last
time you asked yourself “what motivates me?
When was the last
time you asked your subordinate “what motivates you?
If you do this

attention to few thoughts presented in this article and try your hands on in understanding
what motivates people.
In this article we
will understand the following:
·
What are Motives?
·

Does Motivation differ from person to person?
·
Have you come across students who aim
for IIT/IIM and students who do not know what to do after schooling?
·
Have you come across people who refuse
lucrative offers in foreign countries for the sake of being with family in the
home town?
·
Have you come across people who would
like to lead people?
What is the reason
for such differences – The Answer can be 1000 Pages book on many topics ranging
from culture, surrounding, personality etc but to keep it short- It can also be
one’s motivation.
Before reading below,
go back and read the definitions mentioned above.
Now reflect upon the
definition and try to ask yourself the following questions.
·
Why do some students want to achieve
something big in life?
·
Why do some people value relationship
more than an opportunity?
·
Why do some people Want power?
The answer to the
above questions can be understood by following the research done on human
motivation by Psychologist David McClelland
David McClelland
Research findings are as follows:
Need theory: created by psychologist David McClelland,
is a motivational model that attempts to explain how the needs for achievement, power, and affiliation affect the actions of
people.
This model was developed in the 1960s
soon after Maslow's hierarchy of needs in the 1940s. McClelland stated that
we all have these three types of motivation regardless of age, sex, race, or
culture. The type of motivation that each individual is driven by is changed by
life experiences and the opinions of their culture.
Need for Achievement: People who are achievement-motivated typically
prefer to master a task or situation. They prefer working on tasks of moderate
difficulty, prefer work in which the results are based on their effort rather
than on anything else, and prefer to receive feedback on
their work. (Reflect upon the student
who prefers to join IIT/IIM.)
Need for Affiliation: People who have a need for affiliation prefer to spend time creating and
maintaining social relationships, enjoy being a part of groups, and have a
desire to feel loved and accepted. (Reflect
upon the person who does not want to take an offer in a foreign land)
Need for Power: This motivational need stems from a
person's desire to influence, teach, or encourage others. People in this
category enjoy work and place a high value on discipline. (Reflect
upon the person who to wants lead people)
Now ask yourself what motivates you and write it in a piece
of paper
Get up from your chair and ask your subordinate/Colleague
what motivates them?
Once you speak to people classify them based on the above
three needs to create a
motivational plan.
