Leadership Lessons from Basic Human Senses

The nervous system must receive and process information about the world outside in order to react, communicate, and keep the body healthy and safe. Much of this information comes from the sensory organs: the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin.
Similarly, leadership must receive and process information about the business world in order to react, communicate and keep the organization healthy and profitable. Like how we use our sensory organs, the same sensory organs can be used to improve our leadership qualities.
Eyes-The beauty of the world is seen through the eyes. An eye in Leadership does not only mean seeing things around it also mean establishing a vision.

A Leader should visualize the future and communicate his vision so that the team can visualize a long-term career in the organization.

Vision Inspires

Ears-Let it be a melody or an inspiring talk you require an ear to listen. An ear in Leadership does not only mean listening to people it also means empathizing with them.

A Leader should listen to the subordinate & work towards what was communicated, it not only proves a sense of care, it also motivates the subordinate to open up.
                                        Listening Motivates

Nose-Let it be a French perfume or an Indian Aromatic food, you require a nose to smell. A nose in leadership not only means smelling opportunities it also means leader should stop sticking their nose in daily affairs to ensure he/she doesn’t engage in micromanagement.

Smelling opportunities, Keeps the team engaged

Let it be a short speech or a spicy chicken you require a tongue to speak& to taste the food you eat. Tongue in leadership has two meanings:

1.   A Leader should taste both success and failure. He should encourage his team to taste both.

2.   A Leader should be ready to give speeches that appeal both to the logical and emotional brain.

Tasting Failures increases the appetite to succeed

Let it be a heat or warmness, a touch will help us sense it. In Leadership, touch has 3 meanings

  1.          A Leader can have a personal touch
  2.          A Leader can touch his team with her/his action
  3.          A Leader can touch his team with his/her words

When we are touched, we change

In a nutshell, to put the 5 senses in leadership terms, these are some of the points:

  1.          A leader with a vision can inspire and develop more leaders
  2.        . A leader who can listen can motivate and minimise problems
  3.       .  A leader who can smell opportunities can sell the future
  4. ·        A leader who can taste failure can talk about how to succeed
  5. ·        A leader who can touch people can change people

Being Jaby is being a fine human being.

Being Jaby is being a fine human being.   L&D Global Chennai Chapter was instrumental in bringing Jaby closer to my heart, our journey was not too long, but it was filled with fun, humour, joy and learning too. When Jaby was present, dullness was absent. He filled the hall with his sense of humour, and his thoughts were deep-rooted in bringing the best out of every human. Jaby was the most admired person in any forum; when Jaby picked the mic, the audience pulled themselves to the edge of the chair. Jaby was casual in his appearance, but he was a thorough professional everywhere. During COVID, if there was one person whom I counted on to help people, it was Jaby; his car was filled with masks, sanitizer and an oxygen concentrator. His social bent of mind made him a good Samaritan. Jaby was a curious child, whenever we both met, he was curious to improve his skills and knowledge, and his quest for development was limitless. Jaby and I collaborated in the year ...
