Symphony and Management

Inspired by speech given by Maestro Iliyaraja

In the recent times, I was seeing a YouTube video in which Actor Prakash Raj and Iliyaraja were discussing Symphony orchestra in one of the stage shows conducted by Illiyaraja

Prakash Raj asked Maestro Iliyaraja “What is Symphony”?

Illiyaraja asked, “You here to listen to Film Music, why do you want to know about Symphony?”

Prakash Raj immediately responded by stating that “we are here to listen to your music”

Maestro turned towards his orchestra and started moving his magical hand and audience were thrilled with the sound of music that came out from his orchestra.

Maestro after conducting the music said “Symphony cannot be spoken”

After this discussion, he narrated about the tune and his inspiration from the composer Schubert.

Maestro asked can you listen to 4 poets narrating 4 different poems at a time.

Prakash Raj  nodded his head towards no

Maestro turned towards his orchestra and started instructing his violinist to play a tune and stated this is a poem

He stopped the Violinists and instructed the cello and violas team to play and audience were thrilled with sound they heard, he stated that the previous piece was a poem and this is also a poem

Maestro instructed both the violin and cello team to play together and the auditorium was engrossed in the sound they were listening to.

Maestro defined symphony as a form of music where two or more poems are read at a time.

In simple words, it is a harmony of sounds. Though many instruments play together but still the objective is to give a music that sounds one.

Let’s relate management with the symphony. As there are many Musicians in a Symphony orchestra with different tunes on their stand but all of them play together which sounds as a single piece.

Likewise, all the functions in an organisation should come together with their own objective aligned with the organisation objective to produce the desired result.

If harmony needs to be achieved in an organisation they should be like a symphony orchestra which has different musicians who play different sounds and requires different competency to play. Similarly, an organisation will have different types of people with different skill sets but it can all be united with a force called vision

An organisation can be a Symphony or a cacophony it depends on how well the vision is communicated and how well they play together towards the vision

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
