Approaching Subordinates

Approaching Subordinates

If you start approaching your subordinate based on what you like about them, you will see what is right in them. Whereas if you start approaching your subordinate based on what you do not like about them, you will see what is wrong in them.

There are two sides to such an approach, when you only see what is right, you can never see the areas to improve and hence your feedback mechanism will be a

Sunflower Effect where you will only talk about their positive qualities due to which  you can never help your subordinates to neither introspect nor correct their mistakes.

If you only see what is wrong with the subordinate, you will Play Strict while giving a feedback, wherein you only pinpoint the mistakes & never help a person to  neither connect him with his strengths nor help him feel important in the organisation.

As Humans we do have certain Confirmation biases which hinders are ability to approach people as what they are and hence suffer a strained relationship.

Before the advent of Internet these kinds of knowledge were only with the few who either had the hunger to develop or had access to such topics, but today a wealth of information is available about human behaviors.

When there is heavy showers it is always advisable to place the empty buckets and vessels to store the rain water, Similarly when there is wealth of information available at our finger click, let us open our brain which is larger than the super computer to store and process the information required to be an effective Leader and a good human being.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
