Talking Vs Communication – Hearing Vs Listening
When conversing,
it's essential to recognize that mere talking does not necessarily equate to
effective communication. Similarly, simply hearing words does not guarantee
that we are genuinely listening. Effective communication occurs when we tailor
our message to appeal to a person's logical or emotional needs. Authentic
listening involves connecting with a person's feelings.
It's important to
understand that talking is the mere expression of words, whereas communicating
involves genuinely connecting with the other person. Listening is the art of
empathetically putting ourselves in the other person's shoes. Therefore, in
your next conversation, be clear about your objective and what you hope to
achieve through the communication process. Likewise, when you listen, remind
yourself that you are investing valuable time to understand the other person's
feelings and pay attention to effectively respond to what you hear.
