Lessons
from Boiling Water
A
middle-aged man met a monk and said, I am confused and unable to decide.
The
Monk told him to wait, and after a few minutes, he returned and took him to the
place where the water was boiling.
The
Monk said, look at the water and correct your appearance.
The
middle-aged man said I am not able to see my image.
The
Monk said, wait for a few minutes.
The
Monk called the middle-aged man and said now look at the water and
correct your appearance.
The
middle-aged man looked into the water and corrected himself.
The
Monk asked, What was the difference between boiling water and
this stable water?
As
a middle-aged man, when the water was boiling, it was difficult to see my face;
once it settled down, it was easy to see.
The
Monk said boiling water has a purpose: to remove unwanted particles
and serve it hot. Similarly, confusion eliminates unwanted doubts and narrows
our thinking. Once you allow your mind to narrow down, it is easy for you to
make a decision.
The
middle-aged man asked how long this confusion would continue.
With
a smile, the Monk said you should answer some questions rather than look for a
thumb rule.
Remember, stability
can be achieved once we pass through turbulence.
