People get enslaved into slavery without realising their masters are enslaving them with speeches on holiness, past glory, and promises of an unrealistic future. At the same time, their present is slowly eaten by their master's blue-eyed boys. If they don't realise it, they will be the reason for the generation of slavery. 

The big difference between patriotism and jingoism is that a patriot will love his nation but question the leader ruling the country. In contrast, the worshipers will lose the ability to be rational and start defending the leader despite the leader being autocratic. Without people's fear and foolishness, a dictator can never evolve.
