The Living Lesson: What the Cow Teaches Us About Value

The Living Lesson: What the Cow Teaches Us About Value

The cow is the most revered and valuable animal, an integral and sacred part of human life. While alive, she provides the nourishing gift of milk. Through human ingenuity, this milk is transformed into a bounty of products—butter, curd, buttermilk, and more—each offering unique benefits that sustain our health and vitality.

Even in passing, the cow continues to serve. Her skin, repurposed into leather, provides lasting utility. In this way, the cow offers value not just in life but also beyond it.

This presents a profound life lesson. Let us not live merely to leave behind material wealth for the next generation—wealth that is like leather: it may deteriorate in the hands of the wasteful or multiply under the care of the wise. This is a transient inheritance.

The deeper lesson is in how she lives. While alive, every product from the cow nurtures and strengthens us. Surely, while we are alive, the "products" of our being—the words that come from our mouths, the kindness in our actions—should nurture, motivate, and strengthen those around us.

On this day of Mattu Pongal, as we honour and garland these gentle beings, let us strive to embody their quintessential qualities. Let us commit to being responsible humans who add genuine, nurturing value to our fellow beings through the very essence of our lives.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
