Living the Vision
A few organisations truly live their vision. They reach
it, celebrate it, and then—unlike most—they create a new vision and keep
running, generation after generation.
But many others struggle.
They get buried under day-to-day operational issues. Slowly, they settle
for just achieving numbers, and in the process, become numb to their
own vision. They console themselves with convenient truths: "We're
growing as per industry standards" or "Why think
long-term when quarterly results look fine?"
Yet deep down, some of these companies feel the pinch. They feel guilty.
Because deep inside, they know: surviving is not the same as living the
vision.
So how do we ensure a vision stays alive—not just on a poster, but every
single day?
Here are six powerful ideas.
1. Value – Value the Vision
Understand and communicate both the tangible and intangible value
of living your vision. Don't assume your team knows why it matters. Show them.
Feel it yourself first.
2. Identify – Find Enablers and Stoppers
List the activities, behaviours, and systems that push you toward your
vision—and those that pull you away. Then do something radical: strengthen
the enablers and remove the stoppers. Ruthlessly.
3. Stand – Stand for the Vision
The market will turn unfavourable. Tempting opportunities that don't
align with your vision will knock on your door. In those moments,
standing for the vision is hard—but those who stand are the
ones who eventually reach it.
4. Initiate – Encourage Vision-Driven Initiatives
Start small. Encourage initiatives—even experimental ones—that move toward
your vision. When people see action, belief follows. This builds a culture that
doesn't just talk about vision but lives it.
5. Organise – Celebrate the Vision
Organise vision reviews, vision drives, and
even vision festivals. Splash the office with your
vision—literally. Reward and recognise those who contribute meaningfully. What
gets celebrated gets repeated.
6. Say No to Naysayers
Not everyone will align with your vision. Some will call it crazy.
Others will say it's impractical. They will quietly discourage your people.
Here's the hard truth: you cannot keep everyone. Protect your
culture. Politely but firmly distance yourself from those who constantly pull
the vision down.
A Vision Is Not Just a Sentence
A real vision is not a framed quote on a wall.
It's the reason you wake up.
It's why you walk into the office.
It's what makes you go the extra mile in your role.
It's the lens through which you evaluate every decision, every person, every
win.
When you do that, you're not just breathing oxygen.
You're breathing your vision.
