The Eternal Light of the Guru
The word Guru comes from Sanskrit gu meaning
"darkness" or "ignorance," and ru meaning
"remover." A guru, then, is not merely a teacher, but a luminous
force that dispels the shadows of confusion and leads us toward clarity. Like
the full moon cutting through a dark night, the guru’s wisdom brightens our
inner world.
Through every season of life, ignorance walks beside
us—disguised as doubt, fear, or simply not knowing. But in each of these
phases, a guru appears. Sometimes as a schoolteacher who first made us fall in
love with letters; sometimes as a college lecturer who challenged our thinking;
or as a workplace coach, a business mentor, or even a friend who showed up with
the right words at the right time. Each one, in their own way, held our hand
and pointed us toward a brighter horizon.
In today’s fast-paced world, we rarely pause. We race
from one milestone to another, seldom looking back at the hands that helped us
rise. But Guru Purnima offers us that much-needed pause—a gentle reminder to
not just think of our gurus, but to truly thank them. Gratitude, after all, is
not a mere formality; it is the acknowledgment that we never walked alone.
On this sacred day, I bow to every guru who has touched
my life—from the one who taught me to hold a pencil and form my first word, to
the one who introduced me to the magic of science, the vastness of history, the
poetry of languages, and the thrill of sport. I thank those who guided me
through boardrooms, sharpened my business strategy, and stood by me in moments
of uncertainty. And I extend my gratitude to every friend, mentor, and
well-wisher who, knowingly or unknowingly, played the guru's role in my journey.
If there is one lesson this day teaches us, it is this:
to remain a vidhvan, we must forever remain vidyarthi. Humility is the hallmark
of greatness, and gratitude is its language. So this Guru Purnima, let us
celebrate not just the gurus we remember, but the guru in everyone who has ever
shown us the way.
