Managing Expectations and Dealing with Disappointment

Managing Expectations and Dealing with Disappointment

The concept of living a life without expectations seems impractical, as expectations are an integral part of human nature. However, how we react to unmet expectations is within our control. Each one of us inevitably has certain expectations from life and the people we interact with. When these expectations are met, they often result in a sense of happiness, but when they are not fulfilled, they lead to disappointment and unhappiness.

The key lies in disassociating our happiness from these expectations. Understanding that happiness is not dependent on what we receive but is instead a mindset we can access at any time is crucial. While this may seem idealistic, putting this into practice leads to a more pragmatic approach. It prompts us to question whether we should let unmet expectations bring unhappiness or temporary disappointment. It's essential to recognize that disappointment, unlike unhappiness, is transient. When we acknowledge and deal with our disappointment, it becomes easier to move past it. At the same time, harbouring unhappiness can negatively impact our well-being and our environment.

Therefore, when we do not get what we expect, we must remind ourselves that disappointment is a better alternative to prolonged unhappiness.

The Modes of Persuasion The modes of persuasion, often referred to as ethical strategies or rhetorical appeals, are devices in rhetoric that classify the speaker's appeal to the audience. They are: ethos, pathos, logos, and the less-used Kairos & telos The above model has been used by Advertisement agencies to grab the attention of the viewers and finally bring them to the purchase desk or use the cart in shopping sites. If we carefully examine the model, it has a sound application in running an effective training program too.
