Common Sense is becoming Uncommon

I arrived at a banquet hall in Chennai this morning to conduct a workshop. As part of my routine, I always try to arrive 45 minutes before the program starts. This allows me enough time to check the venue and ensure that all facilities are for a smooth presentation.

Upon entering the hall, I immediately wanted to connect my laptop to the projector for my presentation. To my dismay, I discovered the electrical junction box, which only had a single connection. The projector was already plugged into this box, perplexing me about how to connect my laptop. It struck me as impractical to have a projector that cannot accommodate multiple devices.

In such situations, I cannot help but wonder about the purpose of the projector if it can't be utilized effectively with other equipment.

Recently, I’ve noticed a concerning trend in many banquet halls and similar venues. Issues such as a lack of professionalism, inadequate facilities, untrained staff, and a noticeable absence of common sense have become increasingly prevalent. This incident with the junction box epitomizes the urgent need for common sense in event management, a skill that seems to be growing increasingly rare in our everyday experiences.

As we progress into an era dominated by artificial intelligence and advanced technological solutions, it's troubling to realize that natural human intelligence and practical thinking seem to be diminishing. This disparity raises serious questions about our future interactions in both professional and everyday settings, where fundamental common sense is essential.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
