Ignorance and Delusion

Ignorance and Delusion

As Buddha said, "Ignorance is the root cause of all suffering and delusion." This statement holds in the modern world, and many examples prove it. Often, our ignorance is evident in the blind forwards we send to social media groups without verifying the facts. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, messages circulated claiming that chicken was the cause of the virus. This misinformation adversely impacted the poultry industry for several months, depriving us of a valuable source of protein while also harming an entire sector.

There are countless examples of ignorance leading to financial losses, such as WhatsApp group stock trading, cryptocurrency speculation, etc. Regarding delusion, our unexamined beliefs lead us to blindly follow rituals, wasting time and money.

The essence of life is acknowledging our ignorance and continually learning to eliminate it. We must question our belief systems, allowing them to be strengthened or changed. When we remain ignorant and accept information without scrutiny, we become vulnerable to manipulation, leading to a cycle of suffering.

In summary, each day is a new opportunity. We should wake up with a desire to learn, to remove our ignorance, to question our beliefs, and to progress with this mindset, allowing us to experience the novelty of life around us.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
