A 6-Day Journey of Boundaries and Self-Worth-PART 4- The Chalk Line That Changed Everything

A 6-Day Journey of Boundaries and Self-Worth-PART 4- The Chalk Line That Changed Everything

Arjun exhaled deeply. "People expect me to be everywhere, to be everything to everyone. My manager wants me in every meeting and event and expects me to take calls late into the night. My family needs me for every occasion—shopping, holidays, festivals, functions. My friends and relatives are no different. I'm exhausted from trying to be good to everyone. I've reached a point where I just want to quit and walk away from this life of being good to others and bad to myself."

Brother Ananda smiled. He picked up a piece of chalk and drew a line on the red oxide floor. "This side represents my land," he said, pointing to his side. "The line represents the boundary between us. Now, imagine this line is a wall or a barbed fence. Can either of us cross?"

"No," Arjun replied.

"Exactly," the monk said. "In your life, you never drew the line. You left your borders undefined, and so everyone intrudes into your mind and heart. Unless you draw the line—define what it means to be good to others—you will be repeatedly invaded and ruled."

Arjun felt a knot form in his chest. The logic was so simple, yet it cut deep. For years, he had worn his availability like a badge of honour, mistaking exhaustion for virtue. He wanted to protest—But they need me. If I don't show up, everything falls apart—yet even as the thought formed, he recognised its hollowness. Everything falling apart was simply his fear speaking, not reality.

"When you feel the urge to quit," Brother Ananda continued, "that is the moment to draw the line. Define who you are to others. Allocate time for yourself. Otherwise, you will feel like quitting, but your commitments will not allow you to do so."
