The Four Visitors-Busy, Engaged, Occupied, and Productive—Who Is Leading Your Life?
Somewhere in our day,
four distinct figures are waiting for us. We may not have named them, but we've
fed them, worn their clothes, and even let one of them take the wheel of your
life.
Before we travel
alongside Maya to a remote monastery to hear her conversation with a wise monk,
pause and reflect on where you stand right now:
· Are you Busy—always moving, endlessly
responding, but never actually finishing?
· Are you Engaged—fully present and attentive, yet
perhaps directed at the wrong target?
· Are you Occupied—your time, space, and mind so
thoroughly taken up that there is no room left to breathe?
· Are you Productive—achieving meaningful results and
steadily moving what truly matters forward?
Now, look closely at the
four figures standing behind those questions.
One wears a watch that
never stops beeping. One sits completely still, listening. One carries a
crowded calendar bursting with endless to-do lists. And one walks quietly,
holding something finished.
We'd likely have met all
four in our lifetime, or perhaps we are about to. But beware of easy
assumptions: the beeping figure isn't necessarily the enemy, and the silent one
isn't always the saint. Our endless to-do list may offer no real protection,
and the quiet figure might be the very presence we have been avoiding all
along.
One of these four
figures is leading our life right now—and it may not be the one we think. Let
us travel with Maya to discover the true art of being productive.
At the Monastery-Part-2
Maya: Master, I am very stressed and very busy—but not productive. I have
tried time-management sessions. I downloaded calendars, task apps, timers, note
systems. Nothing gives me the result I desire. I find myself doing too many
things. Can you help me come out of this chaos?
Monk: You have been trying to manage time. But time is not your problem. You
have four visitors. Let them introduce themselves.
Busy Enters
Busy: I am Busy. I am the first knock at dawn. I am forty-seven emails. I am
five meetings. I am the urgent ping. I make you feel needed. I fill every gap.
I am motion.
Maya: I know you too well.
Busy: My gift is energy, urgency, quick response, momentum. My wound is that
I scatter you. I make you tired without progress. I help you avoid the
important by drowning you in the urgent. I turn your day into noise.
Maya: After meeting Busy, do this.
Tonight, do not change anything. Only observe.
Write down everything you do. Next to each task, mark R for result or B
for busy. Then ask yourself:
- What was I busy with?
- Which tasks produced a real result?
- Which only made me tired?
- What important thing did I avoid by staying
busy?
- What would happen if I removed three busy
tasks?
Do not kill Busy. Give Busy only chosen tasks.
You cannot transform what you refuse to see.
Maya: I will observe before I change.
Engaged Enters-Part-3
Engaged: I am Engaged. I am attention. I sit where you sit. I listen when you
listen. I ask questions. I lose track of time because I am here.
Maya: I met you once in a good meeting.
Engaged: My gift is focus, flow, learning, trust, quality. My wound is that if I
aim at the wrong thing, I can make you beautifully absorbed in what doesn't
matter. I can become obsessed with gossip and perfectionism. I can burn you out if I
never rest.
Monk: Maya, do this after meeting Engaged.
Choose one task that truly matters. Put away
the phone. Close the extra tabs. Be fully engaged for twenty-five minutes. Then
ask:
- Is this the right task?
- Is this the right person?
- Is this the right moment?
- Did engagement make the work better, calmer,
and useful?
Engagement without direction is a beautiful
arrow shot at the wrong target.
Maya: I will aim attention before giving it.
Occupied Enters-Part-4
Occupied: I am Occupied. I take space. I am the closed door, the booked calendar,
the mind full of worry. I make you unavailable.
Maya: You are my whole week.
Occupied: My gift is that I protect time, duty, and commitment. I let you say, “Not
now.” My wound is that if I take too much, no one can reach you—not your work,
not your loved ones, not even your own heart. I leave no empty room for
clarity.
Monk: Maya, do this after meeting Occupied.
Block one hour today. Call it Unoccupied.
No phone. No task. No productivity. Walk. Sit. Breathe. Stare at a wall. See
what arises. Also set boundaries. Ask:
- What is occupying me?
- Is it worthy of this space?
- What must I leave unoccupied so clarity can
enter?
Empty space is not wasted space. It is where
clarity is born.
Maya: I will protect time and leave some unoccupied.
Productive Enters Last
Productive: I am Productive. I do not shout. I do not rush. I arrive when something
meaningful is finished. I am the proposal written, the client approved, the
next step planned, the tea drunk before it gets cold.
Maya: Why are you so rare in my life?
Productive: Because you confuse me with my three siblings. I need them, but only in
the right order.
Busy can move me—if the tasks are chosen.
Engaged can deepen me—if the target is right.
Occupied can protect me—if the boundaries are wise.
Without them, I am empty. With them rightly
ordered, I am fruitful. I turn Busy into purposeful effort. I turn Engaged into
deep work. I turn Occupied into sacred space. I am results over motion. I am
time used well. I am less stress, greater impact, intentional living.
Monk: Maya, do this after meeting Productive.
Put Productive at the table. Each day ask: What
matters most? Then let Busy serve it, Engaged attend to it, Occupied
protect it, and Productive complete it. Measure by results, not motion.
Maya: I think I understand. I have been confusing movement with progress.
Monk: The goal is not to be busy. The goal is to engage in the right things,
manage what occupies you, and stay productive toward what matters most.
Maya: So, I should use all four?
Roshi: Yes. Let Busy be chosen. Let Engaged be aimed. Let Occupied be wise.
Let Productive be the judge. Then you will not just be busy. You will be
fruitful.
Maya: And now?
Monk: Now drink your tea before it gets cold.
Maya: That is productivity?
Monk: That is productivity, presence, and peace—all in one cup.
And you—who is leading your day?
Busy? Engaged? Occupied? Or Productive?
If you are busy without being productive,
begin tomorrow by inviting all four to the table—and let Productive ask, “Did
this move me forward?”
