An Interaction with a Management Monk
A Manager met a monk to understand
how to handle his subordinates
Manager: Guruji, I want to understand how to mould my subordinates?
Monk: Why do you want to mould them?
Manager: so that they can perform to their fullest potential & organization
can achieve its objective
Monk: Gentleman, if you mould them, will they be what they are or will they
be what you want them to be?
The manager thought for a while &
said “they will be what I want them to be”
Monk: Is it right to use the word moulding or do you feel you can use any other word?
The manager looked puzzled and
said Guruji, “I am confused”
Monk: " Gentleman, the workplace is like Agriculture farming, we need to
decide what we want to produce & decide on the seeds to be
planted".
In farming we need to do a lot of activities depending upon what we want to produce like ploughing, tillage, cropping, installation of best farm management practices, seeding, cultivating, harvesting etc. In short, we need to nurture. Remember, every subordinate is like a seed who needs to be carefully selected and Nurtured. Instead of moulding people, we need to nurture based on their nature.
- We need to move from managing to Leading.
- We need to move from moulding to Nurturing.
- Managing is stressful, leading is challenging.
- Moulding is painful, Nurturing is developing.
Let your company designate you as
Manager but you play the role of a Leader
Let your Company see the employee as
a resource but you see them as a Seed to be nurtured
The great Management lessons
are there on a farm, connect with the ground, stay grounded you can unleash the
Leader in you.
