From Gold Bar to Glowing Jewel: A Lesson for Life

From Gold Bar to Glowing Jewel: A Lesson for Life

Turning a raw gold bar into a stunning piece of jewellery is no simple task. It goes through a series of intense processes—chemical treatments, heating, carving, and the infusion of metals like copper for strength. Each stage transforms the gold a little more until it finally reaches the customer as a beautiful ornament for the fingers, ears, nose, or neck.

Now, let’s compare this journey to human development.

Every human being is like a gold bar—valuable from the very start. But just as gold becomes jewellery, gaining even more value through its beauty and usefulness, we too grow in value as our skills and knowledge develop.

Why is copper added to gold? To make it stronger. Similarly, life adds certain situations that may feel like a reduction in our value—struggles, failures, or pressure. But in truth, these moments transform us into better, more resilient individuals, just as copper helps create finer jewellery.

Gold is pressed and polished to shine. So are we. Without pressure, without polishing, we may never reveal the brilliance within.

To parents: You are the first goldsmith. You shape the bar by infusing values and love.
To teachers: You are the goldsmith of the mind. You add discipline, skills, and knowledge to give the jewellery its form.
To managers: You are the polisher. You apply gentle pressure and guidance to help your employees shine like stars.

Every one of us is a gold bar, touched by many goldsmiths throughout life. And remember—no gold bar ever becomes a beautiful piece of jewellery without undergoing tough treatments. Likewise, none of us can become better, stronger, more skilful, or wiser without facing challenges and difficult moments.

So embrace the heat, the hammer, and the polish. That’s how you go from a bar of gold to a jewel that truly shines.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
