The Four Knocks of Opportunity

 The Four Knocks of Opportunity

Opportunity doesn’t always arrive with a grand announcement. Instead, it knocks four times—each time wearing a different mask: Problems, Crisis, Challenge, and Conflict.

Yet many people miss these knocks. They are deaf to reality.

Some hear the knocking but refuse to open the door, saying, “I’m too busy dealing with life.”

Others wait too long. By the time they finally open the door, no one is there. So they return to their so-called busy lives, never realising what has just left.

Then there are those who ask, a day or even two later, “Did someone knock on my door?”

But a rare few live differently. They keep their door always open, so opportunity can enter royally—without delay, without resistance. These are the people who turn problems into progress, crises into comebacks, challenges into stepping stones, and conflicts into breakthroughs. They are the ones who reach the pinnacle of life.

Think about it:

Ø  The problem the Wright brothers solved—and how it gave us wings.

Ø  The crisis Singapore overcame—and rose stronger than ever.

Ø  The tsunami, earthquake, and volcano–like challenges Japan faces regularly—and masters with grace.

Ø  The ongoing conflict between China and the USA—watch how China turns tension into transformation.

Ø  Even in the quiet conflicts your parents handle between themselves, they still choose to love each other.

Opportunity is not served on a silver platter. It’s not a Mandi biryani, delivered ready to eat. It’s a package of raw ingredients, and your job is to figure out how to cook them.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
