Beyond January: How to Actually Live Your Resolutions

Beyond January: How to Actually Live Your Resolutions

Many people have set their new resolutions; some might achieve them, some might lose momentum along the way, and some are clear that theirs are not New Year's resolutions at all. However, a life guided by such resolutions can help us lead a more disciplined life. Many people share the concern that resolutions take a back seat as the days pass. Here is an action you can take to live your resolutions:

Start Small, Think Mighty.

Remember, not all beginnings should be with a bang; it can be a series of consistent baby steps toward your goals that will help you live your new resolution. Set your resolution today and start moving toward it like an ant; you will find yourself at your desired destination. As long as you realise you are not running a race, you can set your own pace to achieve your New Year's resolution.

Borrow Your Professional Wisdom.

If you are working or doing business, pause for a while and reflect on how your weekly, monthly, and quarterly reviews keep you on track. Bring that same learning into your personal life to review your resolution. This might help you to live your resolution.

Fall in Love with the Process.

Ultimately, a lasting resolution must be more than an obligation; it must be a commitment you nurture. Choose a goal that resonates with you. Fall in love with the person you become in the pursuit of it. Nurture it with patience, forgive your stumbles, and celebrate the tiny victories.

This year, let your resolution be a gentle guide, not a harsh critic. Move at your pace, review your progress, and care for your goal as you would a precious thing.

Wishing you a peaceful and prosperous new year—and early congratulations on the person you’re committed to becoming.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
