Burning the Candle at Both Ends
“Burn the candle at both ends”
describes people who work themselves to the bone—going to bed late, waking up
early, and ending up exhausted. Many of us have done this during our student
years and at work. Sometimes such effort is needed to bring out our best. But
when it becomes a way of life, we put too much pressure on the body and make
the mind restless. The body signals; the mind warns. If we fail to honour them,
then—like a candle burning at both ends—we too may burn out fast.
Yes, we should work hard. But
not at the cost of our health, peace, and happiness. Such success may give us
momentary pleasure, yet leave us in perennial pain.
Remember, not all brightness
brings light into our lives. Some brightness is the beginning of darkness.
