The Mental Dry Dock: Maintenance for the Soul
A dry dock is a place where ships stop for service. After a
thorough check and maintenance, the ship is inspected and, if it meets the
required standards, certified by the appropriate authorities to sail again.
The importance of dry docking is:
·
Hull maintenance and repair
·
Inspection and surveys
·
Propulsion and steering repairs
·
Performance and fuel efficiency
·
Regulatory and environmental
compliance
·
Shipbuilding and conversion
·
Emergency response
·
Economic and strategic value
Just as a ship enters a dry dock, we human beings also need to
enter a mental dry dock. There, we repair our feelings, survey our own
progress, improve our efficiency by correcting our weaknesses, fulfil our
social responsibilities, build our character, respond quickly to the
emergencies we face in life, and increase our self-worth.
Similarly, dry docking helps a ship meet its needs and protects
passengers, goods, and marine life. In the same way, when we enter our own dry
dock, it saves us from unwanted problems, helps us relate well with people, and
ensures we live in harmony with nature without destroying it.
Taking a break and going on vacation may not always relieve our
stress. But once we anchor and cleanse ourselves, vacations will make sense.
