The Price of Defending
Inspired by a Fable
A wolf looked at a crow who was sitting on the
branch of a tree with a piece of cheese. The wolf told the crow, "You are
beautiful. You have nice dark wings." The crow smelled something fishy in
the wolf's sudden appreciation and kept quiet. The wolf told the crow, "I
think you will have a wonderful voice. If you can sing, the entire jungle will
immerse itself in your sweet voice." The crow still remained quiet.
The wolf said, "I think my judgment about
your ability to sing is wrong." The crow immediately took it personally,
opened its mouth to respond, and the cheese fell directly into the wolf's
mouth. The wolf ate the cheese and left.
The connection to our life
Sometimes we are smart enough, like the crow,
not to get carried away by appreciation or appeasement. But once we are rubbed
the wrong way, like the crow, we take it personally and get into a verbal argument, which creates conflict and destroys peace.
Some people are like the wolf in the
story—they deal with others with a hidden agenda. Once they learn that
appeasement doesn't get them the results they want, they use criticism to rub
people the wrong way and get what they want. Like the wolf, who finally
succeeded, they too succeed in their agenda.
Silence is the best tool when dealing with such people.
