Unit-1
Being a Boss depends upon your Performance; being a Leader depends upon your Character.

Let’s understand the meaning of the word Performance & Character before understanding the above stated difference

Performance: The accomplishment of a given task measured against pre-set known standards of accuracy, completeness, cost, & speed. To accomplish the given task the individual should possess and keep developing a set of skills and knowledge on a regular basis

Character: The character of a person or  the qualities they have that make them distinct from other people or places.

When you focus on skills & knowledge your performance will improve, whereas if you focus on your Attitude your character will improve. Your promotion might be based on your performance, but your growth is based upon your character.

People under you might admire your performance but they will respect your character.

People might join you for your performance, but they will stay with you for your character.

In order to evaluate whether there is a Leader or boss in you ask yourself the following questions:

1.   Does your subordinate seek your expertise?
2.   Does your subordinate talk to you beyond the job& job-related issues?
3.   Does your subordinate see you as a well-wisher?
4.   Is your subordinate staying with your despite of organisation pressure?
5.   Do your subordinates refer their friends or other department colleagues to join you?
6.   Do you focus more on improving your performance or character?
The above questions might give you an idea of how others perceive you and what is your focus towards building your character

Character makes trust possible and trust is the foundation of Leadership

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
