Unit-11

Bosses engages in Transaction whereas Leader are engaged in Transformation

Let’s understand the context behind which the above difference has been derived. When I say “Bosses engages in Transaction” I mean they are more oriented towards day to day activities, whereas when I say “Leaders are engaged in Transformation” I mean Leaders are engaged in transforming their subordinates to explore their potential.

Bosses talk about daily activities and their focus is on execution, subordinates are used for their advantage and some of the subordinates feel they are either underutilised or used for routine activities. Whereas Leaders are committed towards developing people and hence they focus on activities that has larger scope for the subordinates to use their strengths and work beyond their comfort zone. In such situations the discussions will be transformational in nature, unlike the bosses whose discussion is restricted to day to day transaction.

Leaders who engages in transformation inspires their team with vision whereas the boss pressurises their team with Targets.

Being transactional in nature, Bosses uses their subordinates as a Ladder, Since Leaders are transformational in nature, they stand on the top of the Ladder to extend their hand for the Subordinates to reach the top.

If employees need to come back to workplace with great zeal, it depends upon what kind of engagement that prevails in the organisation.

Ask yourself the following questions

1.   Do you assign a task and only focus on it?
2.   Does your conversation limit to work and work-related aspects?
3.   Do you start the day, by checking the status?
4.   Do you spend time on developmental discussion?
5.   Do you share the vision & check how will subordinates contribute towards the vision?
6.   Do you nominate your subordinates for developmental programs?

By answering the above question you can understand your engagement model, the more transformational you are, the more Leaders you develop.

Make your interaction with people more Transformational, not just Transactional

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
