Weed out the Boss- Unit-9

Unit-9

Bosses pinpoints the weaknesses whereas Leaders highlights the strengths

Let’s understand the context behind which the above difference has been derived. When I say “Bosses pinpoints weaknesses” I mean they keep reinforcing the subordinate’s weaknesses and does not work towards helping them to overcome it.

whereas when I say “Leaders highlight the strengths”, they do know what is their subordinate’s strengths and keep nurturing it, they also know their subordinate’s weaknesses, but they will not keep highlighting it, instead they will coach them to overcome it.

When a subordinate’s weaknesses are being highlighted it brings down his/her morale and buries their strengthen within, there are bosses who does this & brands people as incapable. Whereas Leaders are aware that humans are combination of strengths & weaknesses and their job is to highlight to strengths and help the subordinate overcome the weaknesses.

It becomes stressful to a subordinate when his weaknesses are being pinpointed and his ability to connect with his strengths erodes, this will reduce the morale and result in poor performance. Whereas Leaders gives a sense of motivation by highlighting the strengths and sense of relief by working on the weaknesses.

Highlighting weaknesses is poor sign of Emotional Intelligence, whereas helping the subordinate overcome the same, is a hall of Emotional Intelligence.

Employees join with a dream to grow, but under bosses their dreams are shattered in worries of weaknesses, whereas under Leaders even mediocre, can become an excellent performer when their strengths are reinforced and weaknesses are corrected.

 Ask yourself the following questions

1.   Do you spend time with your subordinates to identify their strengths and weaknesses?

2.   Do you keep talking about your subordinate’s weaknesses?

3.   Do you keep highlighting your subordinate’s strengths to the right person?

4.   Do you tell your subordinates about their strengths and weaknesses?

5.   Do you sit on one to one to help your subordinates overcome their weaknesses?

By answering the above question, you can understand whether there is a boss in you who is focused on highlighting the weaknesses or there is a Leader in you who reinforces the strengths & take measures to overcome your subordinate’s weaknesses

The growth & development of people is the highest calling of Leadership

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
