Unit-5

Boss Reacts whereas a Leader Responds

Let’s understand the context behind which the above difference has been derived. When I say “Boss Reacts”, it means when things go wrong, boss displays displeasure through anger, whereas when I say “Leader Responds” it means Leader demonstrates his ability to understand & respond by being solution oriented.

Boss reacts by talking about the mistakes very often whereas a Leader responds by deriving the learning from the mistakes.

Where there are performers there will be mistakes, where there are mistakes there will also be creativity. When a boss comes across a mistake, he reacts and warns, whereas when a Leader comes across a mistake, he tries to understand the reason behind the mistakes and proactively respond to the situation.

Due to Reactive behaviour Many creative outputs have been branded as mistakes and buried under the carpet, whereas due to ability to respond, subordinates perceive such situation as an opportunity to learn & produce better results

Ask yourself the following questions:

1.   Do you yell at your subordinate, when things go wrong?
2.   Do you keep pinpointing the mistakes done by your subordinate?
3.   Do you consider mistakes as an output of efforts?
4.   Do you give time for your subordinate to learn from his/her mistakes?
5.   Do you show your displeasure when, your subordinate doesn’t meet your expectations?

The above questions might give you an idea of whether you are misled by your reaction or guided by your response. True Leaders listens to understand and thus helps them to respond.
When you react, you are giving away your power. When you respond, you are staying in control of yourself

The Modes of Persuasion The modes of persuasion, often referred to as ethical strategies or rhetorical appeals, are devices in rhetoric that classify the speaker's appeal to the audience. They are: ethos, pathos, logos, and the less-used Kairos & telos The above model has been used by Advertisement agencies to grab the attention of the viewers and finally bring them to the purchase desk or use the cart in shopping sites.
