The Two Faces of Religion: From Terrorism to Compassion

The Two Faces of Religion: From Terrorism to Compassion

In the hands of hatemongers—those driven by vengeance and a disregard for human life—religion becomes a weapon. It turns into violence, a source of menace, and ultimately an act of terrorism. Such individuals breed fear and disrupt the harmony of the world, all in the name of an ideology rooted in age-old mythology.

Yet, in the hands of those who love humanity and believe in peace and coexistence, the very same religion transforms into a spiritual path. It brings forward the values of life that faith advocates—compassion, kindness, and empathy—and helps fill the world with understanding and love.

We must never pay heed to radicals who claim their religion is superior and their god the only god. Let us remember that mankind existed long before religion was born. Religion is a human construct, like any other institution—flawed and shaped by time. God, on the other hand, has never belonged to any single religion.

The cave dweller worshipped nature, seeking shelter from cold and heat, and offering gratitude for survival. Nature was both saviour and destroyer. Perhaps the only force truly worthy of our reverence is nature itself. As for the rest, let it rest in peace.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
