Leadership Simplified-Part-6-Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic Motivation
In the knowledge economy employee’s motivation are different, it becomes imperative for the Leader to invest time to understand what motivates them, in the past there was lot of emphasis on external Motivation which is otherwise called as an extrinsic Motivation, where Leaders were figuring out how to motivate the team & were developing Incentive schemes, Rewards & Recognition  Programs, but today Leaders need to work on Internal Motivation which is otherwise called as an Intrinsic Motivation.
Leaders should understand the Intrinsic needs of the Team members, this is possible only when they spend time on both task and the person. Leaders should spend quality time to understand their subordinate’s goals and plans, by doing so they can connect with the subordinates intrinsic Motivation and customize the Motivation plan according to the needs of the subordinates.
Such motivation plan will not only sound personal it will also reinforce the subordinates that their Leaders are addressing their Intrinsic needs, and which will also enhance their performance.
When the Leaders addresses the Intrinsic needs, they not only make a difference in their subordinates’ lives, they also develop a strong self-motivated team who sees jobs beyond rewards & recognition

Leaders do not give carrots; they help their subordinates identify their vision in them
