True Leaders inspires people with Vision, their discussion goes beyond
deadlines and deliverable. They see one to one as an opportunity to understand
their subordinates’ career objectives and Mentor them towards it.
Sometimes, Leaders might have subordinates who would have not planned their career, with such people Leaders should use one to one to sessions to set
goals and review those goals. Such kind of activities will develop a sense of
clarity among their Subordinates& increase their commitment too.
In order make one to one very effective, Leaders needs to have detailed
knowledge about their subordinate’s abilities and their future. This will not only help them in improving their subordinate’s
performance it will also help them in creating a road map with milestones too.
By doing so, subordinates will look one to one as a career enhancement discussion
and not as a review session.
It is advisable to have a performance review separately where the
discussion can focus on the task and one to one can focus on Career Development. A good conversation should be a dialogue where both should feel they
have added value to each other, when it comes to Leader and a subordinate
relationship, Leaders should leave the table with a sense of satisfaction that they have added value to their subordinate’s
future and subordinates should go with a hope that there is a Leader whom they can look upon to build a future.
