Conquering Self
A young man asked a
monk, "Who is the greatest conqueror in the world?"
The monk replied,
"Nobody."
The young man
continued, "But people talk about Alexander, Ashoka, Genghis Khan, etc.
Are they not conquerors?"
The monk asked,
"Did they conquer death?"
Puzzled, the young
man inquired, "What do you mean by conquering?"
The monk explained,
"Conquering means overcoming greed, anger, lust, pride, and many other
qualities that enslave us. Do you think human beings have conquered all these
traits?"
The young man shook
his head and said, "I don't think anyone has conquered all these
qualities."
The monk responded,
"Every step you take to overcome these traits puts you on the path to
conquering yourself. Those who conquer themselves will have no reason to
conquer others. In fact, one lifetime is not enough to fully conquer oneself.
So, pay attention to the qualities that negatively impact your life and start
working on overcoming them."
