The Compass Within: Why Your Life's Goal Needs No Ranking

The Compass Within: Why Your Life's Goal Needs No Ranking

Some wake up each morning with a single, burning desire: to live a long life, to see a century of sunrises.
Some chase vitality, dreaming not of years, but of endless energy—a life brimming with health.
Some are architects of achievement, driven to build something monumental, to leave an indelible mark.
Some seek the quiet hum of happiness, prioritising joy in the small, everyday moments.
Some crave serenity, a life of stillness and peace, far from the world's relentless noise.
Some are fueled by service, their purpose found in being useful to society.
Some desire a king-size existence, a life of luxury, abundance, and grand spectacle.
Some fight for freedom, yearning to live entirely on their own terms.
Some are guided by a sacred script, living in perfect alignment with their ideology.
And some are warriors for a cause, their hearts set on fire by a mission greater than themselves.

We cannot rank this list. We cannot weigh one against another, declare a "best," or even pick a definitive top three. To do so would be to impose a false hierarchy on the infinite complexity of the human soul.

The path is deeply personal. It is your life, and you alone hold the pen to define its narrative. Seeking others to choose for you is a surrender of your sovereignty. Blindly following the trail blazed by another—whether they chased wealth, peace, or glory—is not wisdom; it is a quiet form of mental slavery. The more we depend on others to map our journey, the more we lock ourselves in a cage of their making.

Each of these lives carries its own profound meaning, unique beauty, and set of trials. The person who chooses the path must also embrace its shadow.

Let us be free to choose our own way. And let us grant others the same grace—to stop demanding how they should live, and instead, celebrate the glorious diversity of their choices.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
