Why Do We All Require a Mentor?

Why Do We All Require a Mentor?

Before exploring why we require a mentor, let us look at the origin of the word—and how it evolved from a proper noun into a modern adjective.

From Greek Myth to Modern Word-The Original "Mentor": In Homer's epic The Odyssey, written nearly 3,000 years ago, Mentor is the trusted friend whom Odysseus leaves in charge of his household and his young son, Telemachus, while he goes to fight in the Trojan War. Over the centuries, this specific character's name became the common noun we use today.

Here is why a mentor is essential to our personal and professional growth:

The M-E-N-T-O-R Framework

M

·       Mend our thoughts

·       Mould our behaviour

·       Motivate us to stay inspired

E

·       Ensure we stay focused

·       Earn respect in our chosen field

·       Ease our pain

N

·       Nurture us to stay tuned

·       Nimble our actions (or: Make our actions nimble)

·       Navigate us through tough times

T

·       Throw light on our thinking process

·       Thoroughly criticise us to bring clarity

·       Touch our lives both emotionally and mentally

O

·       Observe our actions

·       Open our eyes to the truth

·       Organize our lives

R

·       Reinforce our strengths

·       Reflect on our weaknesses

·       Relate to our needs

With a humble heart to learn and a noble mind to serve, let us all pledge to find a mentor who can help us connect with our vision and guide us in reaching our goals.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
