Collaboration
Lesson from Local Eateries
I live in a crowded and one of the oldest areas in
Chennai called Aminjikarai, which has commercial areas as well as residential
areas. Regularly I use a lane to reach the main road and the lane has few shops
which caters to various types of people, some of these shop keepers do close
their business due to various reasons and I did witness a shop which was kept
closed for some time.
One morning when I was walking towards the main
road, I witnessed a new tiffin centre in the lane serving south Indian
breakfast, which was not only hygienic it was also looking yummy and there were
people who were waiting for their parcels.
On the same day, when I was returning back to home
in the evening I saw a chat centre in the same shop which had few youngsters
waiting for their turn to eat Pani Puris, I was surprised to see new set of
people doing the business which not only gained my attention and I started
observing the shops for few days.
Later I understood through my known source that the
tiffin centre and chat centre was run by two different people, but they both
joined together and requested the building owner to let out the premises in the
morning for tiffin centre and evening for chat centre.
They also requested the land owner to install basic
kitchen facilities, for which they were willing to pay few extra rupees along
with the rent, the building owner agreed and the premises was given for rent.
Imagine if any of the eateries
would have rented it fully, they would have paid more rent for a business which
is done for limited time and in order to earn extra rupees they would have
moved out of their core competency, which is not advisable in certain business.
This collaborative approach not only helped them to save
money on a monthly rent, it also helped them from incurring capital expenditure
involved in establishing a kitchen.
Such kind of innovative approach not only saves
money, it also helps other businesses to learn lessons from such approach.
When Renault, Nissan & Mitsubishi
can collaborate, why not we?
