Life Lessons from a Ripe Mango

Life Lessons from a Ripe Mango

A ripe mango in your hand did not just ripen the moment you took it from the basket. That mango has seen seasons and has undergone a natural process to reach your fruit bowl. It carries within it the efforts of many hands and the touch of nature, all working together to make it sweet and ripe. However, there is also a darker side to this story: some people use artificial means to ripen mangoes, turning them into something hazardous and unhealthy.

Now, let us apply the same thought to successful people. Whenever you come across someone successful, remember that they did not become successful the day you noticed them. They, too, would have seen their own seasons—some favourable, some unfavourable. They would have undergone their own process, one that was likely challenging, daunting, and hard. You can take such people as your inspiration and get motivated to achieve greatness in your own life.

However, just like the artificially ripened mango, there are some people we should be mindful of and avoid. These are individuals whose success is built on unethical practices, illegal means, apathy toward others, and wrong methods to reach where they are.

Just as we prefer organic growth in the food we eat, let us also look for people who have experienced organic growth in their lives. Let us follow their examples and draw insights from their journeys for our own well-being.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
