Standards Vs Values -Why Both Matter-Part 4-Example
A
Practical Example
Imagine a company that lists "Safety" as a
core value.
The Value (The "Why"): "We value the health and safety of our employees above all else. We believe no task is so important that it cannot be done safely." (This is a belief.
The Standards (The "How"): Because they
hold that value, they adopt strict Occupational Health and Safety standards
(such as ISO 45001). They create specific standards for wearing hard hats, for
locking out machinery during repairs, and for reporting hazards. (These are the
rules that make the value real).
If the company had the value but no standards,
safety would just be a poster on the wall—all talk, no action. If they had
standards but no value, employees would likely cut corners to get the job done
faster, ignoring the rules because they don't believe the company truly cares.
