Simply- Simplicity

Simply- Simplicity

"Simplicity" refers to the quality of being easy to understand, do, or use. However, it also describes a person who leads a life free from luxury, designer wear, and ostentatious displays of wealth. We often admire simplicity rather than flaunting wealth or luxury when describing others.

Let's take a moment to introspect: Do we aspire to simplicity, or are we chasing a dream filled with brands and sophistication? Are we seeking validation through the wristwatch we wear or the car we drive? Are we purchasing homes to prove our success in life? The more questions we ask about our lifestyle, the better we can determine whether we are moving toward simplicity or burning ourselves out to be admired.

Aspiring for a good standard of living is not wrong, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of our peace of mind. We should avoid getting entangled in loans to acquire expensive items and running a rat race to pay them off. To stop this cycle, we must define what we truly need and can do without. Such understanding will help us shape our definition of simplicity.

Those who embrace simplicity live in harmony. They may have a watch that tells time, just as a luxury watch does; a car that transports them comfortably, even if it’s not the fastest; and a home that protects them from the heat and cold, just as a luxury apartment would. When the results are the same, why pursue costly things? What are we trying to prove by acquiring items beyond our means?

In simple terms, simplicity means living a life defined by our values that does not stress us financially or satisfy our egos. It means not needing to prove anything to the world. Great leaders like Lal Bahadur Shastri and Kamaraj walked this path of simplicity, and they will be remembered forever, unlike those who merely owned bungalows, horses, and villages, whose names and identities are forgotten.

A simple beginning, a simple living, and a graceful exit are all that matter for the body, which will either be ashes or bones.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
