Choices and Temptations

Choices and Temptations

People often say that life is full of choices, and the choices we make define who we are. However, there are two key factors related to choices: temptations and decision-making. When we succeed, people say we have chosen the right path; when we fail, they claim we have chosen the wrong one. Yet, what is considered right or wrong is subjective.

Temptation is often overlooked, and the process of how to make decisions is not well understood. Although we know that life involves choices, it is essential to understand ourselves better and define our goals beforehand. Without this understanding, temptation can stifle our ability to decide, leading us to become impulsive.

Life is not just about making choices; it’s also about overcoming our temptations. This can start with minor issues, such as the temptation to eat junk food, the urge to invest without proper reasoning, or the desire to make purchases without justification. Unless we recognize what tempts us and learn to regulate these temptations, our decisions may lead us astray, resulting in choices that can push us into misery.

Ultimately, making favourable choices is possible for those who can successfully manage their temptations.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
