The Last-Minute Syndrome

The Last-Minute Syndrome

We often find ourselves or others procrastinating until the last minute, whether applying for a passport renewal, boarding a train, or filing tax returns. Sometimes, we even wait until our health issues become complicated. Have you ever wondered why we have this tendency to delay? The reasons can vary: some people thrive on the last-minute rush, others lack a sense of urgency, priorities may shift, or it could simply stem from laziness.

Before attempting to change this behavior, it's crucial to understand its implications. For example, booking a ticket at the last minute can lead to a lack of available seats or higher prices. Rushing to file an online tax return or application can result in server crashes or delays, potentially leading to fines. Delaying medical check-ups can have serious consequences down the line. Unless we recognize the effects of our behavior, we won't be able to change it.

Make a list of what you currently put off until the last minute and consider the implications of that procrastination. If the consequences seem discouraging, take action immediately.

When you book your flight to Thailand in advance, you can save a few thousand baht, which you can then use to indulge in delicious Thai food, explore vibrant night markets, or enjoy a relaxing foot massage.

So, what are you waiting for? Book your tickets!

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
