Concept of Self

Concept of Self

The term "self" is more than just a four-letter word; it encompasses many facets of a person. To understand ourselves better, we should focus on the following aspects:

Firstly, we need to develop self-awareness, which enables us to identify our strengths and weaknesses.

Next, we must recognize our mistakes before blaming others. This process is known as self-realization.

It’s essential to understand how we perceive ourselves, which is closely related to our self-concept.

We should also acknowledge our worth, referred to as self-worth.

Even when we face challenges and setbacks, we need to motivate ourselves to bounce back; this is known as self-motivation.

In situations that trigger our anger, it is essential to practice self-control.

To live free from impulsive behaviours and temptations, we should focus on self-regulation.

We must maintain a sense of self-esteem to help us withstand failures and setbacks.

Finally, to live a life based on our values, we must practice self-respect.

Understanding the concept of "self" involves recognizing these components:

- Self-Awareness

- Self-Realization

- Self-Concept

- Self-Worth

- Self-Motivation

- Self-Control

- Self-Regulation

- Self-Esteem

- Self-Respect

Once we appreciate ourselves in light of these factors, we can effectively define who we are and lead a life that aligns with our values.

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
