Your Life, Your Lessons
A young man asked a
monk, "Can you share your life lessons?" The monk replied, "It
is my life and my lesson. What use is there in learning from my
experience?" The young man looked confused and rephrased his question:
"What can you teach me from your life experiences?"
The monk laughed, repeating, "It is my life and my lessons; you can learn nothing from
them."
The young man fell
silent. The monk continued, "My dear young man, remember, each of us has
our own life, and every life differs from the others. Unlike exams, we don’t
have the same syllabus and tests. Each of us has our own curriculum set by
ourselves, and we need to create and answer the questions. Although we set the
questions, it’s not easy to provide the answers because life isn't just a
three-hour exam; every day presents a new test, and every day is a results day.
All we need to do is
ask ourselves, 'What lessons did I learn today, and how can I improve myself?'
We can take advice from others, but that doesn’t mean it will fit our lives. We
must continually explore within to give meaning to our existence. Go ahead and
search for the learning within; your life differs from mine, and we all have
our purposes to fulfill."
The young man felt a
sense of relief and said, "Thank you, Master. Although you didn't answer
my question directly, you have inspired me to ask myself more questions in
life."
