Graduation and Education
There is a
distinction between graduation and education. While graduation stems from
education, proper education encompasses much more than graduation, post-graduation,
MPhil, doctorates, and post-doctorates. It includes our school and university
experiences, life, the environment, and the people around us. Upon completing
our university education, a degree certificate symbolises our graduation, but
there is much more to life beyond these degrees. Life is an ongoing process of
learning, with no definitive completion.
Let us consider a few
examples to illustrate the importance of understanding ongoing learning. Having
a degree is not meaningful if we lack self-awareness. A degree without civic
sense is of no use to us or others. If we do not know how to value our own time
and the time of others, then the years spent in university are wasted.
Furthermore, having a degree and not knowing how to earn, save, and invest proves
that the money spent on graduation has just gone down the drain. Not knowing
how to relate to people means that the person sitting next to us in class may
remain merely a classmate, rather than becoming a meaningful connection.
Focusing exclusively
on academic subjects without learning how to manage ourselves, interact with
others, and navigate the realities of life can lead to disaster, both for
ourselves and those around us.
Gain your university
degree, but continue educating yourself to remain humble and resilient,
embracing the perspective of being an eternal student of life.
