Leadership Simplified-45-Leadership Lessons from Village Life-Part-3

 Leadership Lessons from Village Life-Part-1

Lesson-3-Life Skills

In those days only few houses had TV Sets in villages & connectivity  was not so good, hence my evenings were not as entertaining like city life but I used to have a good time in the mornings with my relatives and their friends in the village

We all meet in one of our home Thinnai and discuss our plans for the day, one of the favorite activities was swimming in the well, which was a strict no from my family members, but I used to go along with my friends. One of my relative was an expert in swimming and he will force us to enter the well, which some of us will avoid but others will try it out.

I have seen amazing leadership skills exhibited by that expert while teaching how to swim.

First of all, he will enter the well and swim for some time and create a feeling it is easy to do it, a good Leader should demonstrate how to do it before teaching or delegating a task

Second, he will talk with confidence and share his stories of how he learnt swimming, a true leader should inspire people with their experience

Third, he will spread both the hands and ask one of the boys to lie on his hands and ask him to move his hands and lift his legs, while doing this the expert will  withdraw his hands and other person will start drowning and expert will quickly pull him back and give him the assurance that he will take care, after few days of practise, few of my relatives go back with one life skill to their home.

The Greatest quality of Leader is giving confidence and building trust while training their subordinates.

There is no great sophistication in a village life, but there was lot of life out there. Each and every moment in a village teach us simplicity, life skills, working with limited resources and above all it teaches us the ability to relate and work with others.

There is life in a village and hence there is lot of life skills to learn, similarly when Leaders gives life to their role they play, they will add value to their subordinates’ life too

Listen, Understand and Respond

Listen, Understand and Respond Most of the time, people listen to respond rather than to understand. By the time the other person finishes speaking, the listener is often already formulating a response. Let’s explore what happens in such situations. While listening, we may be trying to engage our logical brain to recall our memories and creativity for a response, or we may be accessing our emotional brain to defend ourselves against what is being said. For example, if one person talks about ways another could improve, the listener might offer excuses such as a lack of time, resources, or support. Alternatively, they may bring up personal emotions, like health or family issues. These reactions often occur while the other person is still speaking, leading to a decreased understanding and an increased eagerness to defend one’s position. During this type of conversation, the listener may appear restless, exhibiting a lack of eye contact or head nodding. In such interactions, th...
