Leadership Lessons from Books on Self-Development Part-1

There are millions of books on Self-Development in the world which is written in many languages by various people ranging from bestselling Authors to a first time Author. These books convey the importance of Self, Reasons to Improve Self and tips to Improve Self. At the end of the reading, we will realise our importance and motivate ourselves for a betterment. The writings in these books can be divided into 4 parts:

  1.   Establish the Pitch

  2.   Develop A Sense of Realisation

  3.   Reinforce the Need to Improve Self

  4.   Tips to Improve Self

Though the book does not explicitly state the above division, but still the overall writing will follow a similar pattern. Let’s understand what we can learn from these books to improve Leadership Skills.

Establish the Pitch: In a Self-Development book the Author establishes a strong pitch by reasoning out the purpose behind the book and establish the sense of importance by stating what lies ahead in the book, this will help the reader to understand the need for buying/hiring the book. Such a pitch is written in the Preface or written as Blurb which talks about the importance of the book in the back wrapper

The thought behind “Establish the Pitch” is we should develop a sense of purpose as a Leader and establish the same among our subordinates. Leadership can be compared to a Journey, where we need to take people along with us, if the sense of purpose is clear the journey is smooth. Whenever we take over as Leader, we should articulate our sense of purpose and identify the team’s expectations which will result in a good beginning and ensure smooth functioning.

As a Leader if you feel the pitch is not well established or if you are new to Leadership role, start the above exercise of stating your purpose and understanding others purpose.

The Inclination to read the book increases when the pitch is well established, similarly the need to work along with the Leader increases when the sense of purpose is well established.

Vision becomes a Reality when we Establish a sense of Purpose in what we Do

The Modes of Persuasion The modes of persuasion, often referred to as ethical strategies or rhetorical appeals, are devices in rhetoric that classify the speaker's appeal to the audience. They are: ethos, pathos, logos, and the less-used Kairos & telos The above model has been used by Advertisement agencies to grab the attention of the viewers and finally bring them to the purchase desk or use the cart in shopping sites. If we carefully examine the model, it has a sound application in running an effective training program too.
