Leadership Lessons from Strategic Thinking Part-1

Henry Mintzberg is a Management professor and Author on various books related to management From Canada. In his work on Strategic thinking he has developed seven dimensions of strategic thinking as ways of developing Strategies for an organisation, in this Leadership series, I have adopted his work for Leadership development.

Let us understand Leadership development through seven dimensions of Strategic Thinking

Strategic Thinking-1-Seeing Ahead- The term Seeing Ahead means Foreseeing an expected future by constructing a framework out of the events of the past. Good Leaders will see, and act based on the future. In simple words they look forward, but they consider the Past, because they believe that they can’t see ahead unless they see behind, because any good vision of the future has to be rooted in an understanding of the past.

Strategic Thinking -2-Seeing Behind

Why do Good Leaders see the Past to see the Future?

There are two things they take from the past, first is good Practises of the past which can be instrumental in identifying the strengths and the same can be used as foundation for the future. Second is Mistakes of the past which be a caution while building the future.

To experience these two types of thinking, set a Goal which you should achieve in the next three months in your Team/Organisation using the below:

I.       Goal statement:

II.       List down your strengths:

III.     How can you use the strengths to achieve your goal?

IV.     List down your Team’s /Organisation weaknesses:

V.      Identify how the above weakness will adversely impact your goal

VI.    List down what will you do to overcome the weakness

VII.   List down the mistakes that was committed in the past

VIII. Identify how to above mistakes will adversely impact your goals

IX.    List down how will you ensure the above mistakes are not repeated in the future

Visit the past to develop the future

The Modes of Persuasion The modes of persuasion, often referred to as ethical strategies or rhetorical appeals, are devices in rhetoric that classify the speaker's appeal to the audience. They are: ethos, pathos, logos, and the less-used Kairos & telos The above model has been used by Advertisement agencies to grab the attention of the viewers and finally bring them to the purchase desk or use the cart in shopping sites. If we carefully examine the model, it has a sound application in running an effective training program too.
